Projects, layers, and animation
Organise a Project with colours and layers, then bring fixed-canvas Artwork to life with frames.
Colour and palettes
- Click the primary or secondary colour well to use the browser colour picker.
- Enter a six- or eight-digit value in the Hex field.
- Click a palette swatch to make it primary, or right-click it to make it secondary.
- Press X to swap the primary and secondary colours.
- Use the pin control in Colour lab to add the primary colour to the Project palette.
A palette retains up to 32 unique colours. Drawing and generated content use the primary colour. The secondary colour is a stored alternate; right-clicking the canvas with Pencil or Dither erases.
Work with layers
Choose a layer in the inspector to make it active. You can rename it, show or hide it, lock it, change its opacity, and choose Normal, Multiply, Screen, or Overlay blending.
- Add a blank layer or duplicate the active layer.
- Use the arrows or drag a layer row to change its position.
- Delete the active layer; at least one layer must remain.
- On a fixed canvas, Merge down combines the active layer with the one below it.
- On a fixed canvas, Flatten combines visible layers into one layer across every frame.
The layer list shows the topmost layer first. A locked layer can still be inspected or selected, but drawing, moving, cutting, pasting, and deleting cannot change it.
Resize, crop, and transform
These Image menu operations are available on fixed canvases:
- Resize artwork scales every frame and layer with crisp nearest-neighbour sampling.
- Crop to selection crops every frame and layer to the selection's rectangular bounds.
- Flip horizontal, Flip vertical, and Rotate clockwise affect the active layer in the active frame.
Rotation can swap the Project width and height.
Animate a fixed Project
Build frames
- Use Add for a blank frame or Duplicate for a copy of the active frame.
- Draw the change in the new frame.
- Repeat, then drag frame cards or use the movement controls to reorder them.
Set the timing
Select a frame and enter its duration from 20 to 10,000 milliseconds. Playback follows every frame's own duration and loops after the final frame. The FPS readout is based on the average duration.
Preview and onion skin
- Use Play in the timeline or Animation menu for in-editor playback.
- Open Animation > Live preview for a larger view from 1× to 12×.
- Enable onion skin to see neighbouring frame content behind the active frame.
- Use Left Arrow and Right Arrow to step between frames.
Animation tags
Open the tag strip, name the tag, and choose Tag all. The tag covers all current frames and loops. The current editor does not offer a custom frame range or loop mode when creating a tag.
Expandable Project limits
Expandable Projects are static and contain one frame. They do not show the Animation menu or timeline, and they disable fixed-canvas resize, crop, Merge down, and Flatten. Add canvas space with the edge + controls.
